Chelsea will be looking to start their first game under new manager Maurizio Sarri in a bright way, with players adapting to a new formation, new tactics and a different style of play.
Last year, Antonio Conte’s pre-season was more concentrated on gaining match fitness again, with a hard schedule planned, causing players to get tired very early on in the season.
Whereas this year, our pre-season will all be about the players learning how to play Sarri’s football, also known as Sarriball.
As ever in pre-season, the result will not matter as much, but a good pre-season can certainly increase confidence for the upcoming season.
Players who would’ve been disappointed last year with their season, or players who didn’t get enough minutes, like Morata and Barkley, will be looking to impress early on to Maurizio Sarri, and a few goals could really help them for this season.
Pre-Season is also a great chance for younger players and new signings to show to Chelsea fans and the manager what they can do. Jorginho is expected to start and most Chelsea fans eyes will be on him and how well he plays, but also on the youngsters who could get a chance like Hudson-Odoi, Tammy Abraham, Musonda and Aina.
It is expected that Chelsea will be playing in a 4-3-3 formation, however in game one should expect many changes in formation and tactics and could easily be switched to two strikers up front as there are not many wingers in the team.
The match in three days will be an interesting one for sure, and we could see some very attacking football back at Chelsea for the first time in a while.
We will also find out in which positions Sarri plays certainly players like Azpilicueta, Morata, Luiz, Barkley and many more.
Although many players in the squad for Monday have been rumoured to leave the club, the game certainly could change their position as they get a rough idea at what style of football they will get at Chelsea and how many minutes they will get next season.
